Sitting there looking at my 'horigami' monster, I thought, 'this is the perfect analogy of how I learn things'. It really doesn't bother me that my first attempt at doing something doesn't often produce perfect results. In fact, I'd go as far as saying that trying to do something just to see what happens is what I love to do. Now the world may be full of critics who might say, "Oh Kevin really - what you've actually created here is really quite crap!" I take a certain amount of pleasure in knowing that at least I created something, at least I learned something and it did amuse me for a while. Often those who criticise us don't actually create things themselves. They tell themselves that they will only share a filtered version their lives where everything has turned out perfectly ... you know ... lets photoshop my selfie!!! This is the same when it comes to learning a language. Often people feel they need to wait until they've reached a point where they can speak a language perfectly. But that's the thing ... unless you actually throw yourself around in the language and accept that you're going to make lots of mistakes ... you'll never be ready.
So with this in mind, I thought, yes, I don't want my blog to be a highlights reel. I'm going to live in Japan and I'm going share my story with anyone who cares to hear what I have to say. I'm sure I'm going to have a fantastic time, but I'll also have times where life will throw me a curve-ball ... but that is what I think is going to make this story something that other people can relate to. So that's why I thought, yes ... 'horigami' that's as good a title as any I can think of for this blog of mine.
